What the customer is asking for

The client has a sample of black adhesive film and wants to know its composition. The goal of the investigation is to replicate the production of the adhesive film. For this reason, the client needs to know the most detailed composition of the material.

The solution proposed by Plastanalisi

Our laboratory has more than 15 years of experience in analyzing the composition of polymers and plastic materials of various kinds. In this case, our technicians proceeded by developing a flow of analysis aimed at identifying the polymeric matrix of the material and its detailed composition in terms of additives.
First, by means of infrared analysis, the composition of the plastic film is determined, the base material is olefinic, more precisely polyethylene (PE), while the adhesive side consists of an adhesive of acrylic nature. The DSC analysis confirms the presence of polythene as a polymeric matrix and allows the integration of the infrared data by characterizing the polyethylene as low-density polyethylene (LDPE).
The analysis of the fillers shows that the material is not significantly loaded.

Once this first phase of identification of the polymeric matrix is completed, we proceed to a more detailed study with analysis of the additives. In this case, the additives present are close to 0.6% by weight. The additives consist largely of residues of acrylic adhesive but also include compatibilizing additives, phenolic antioxidants and release agent (slip agent).

Analysis results

To facilitate the understanding of the characteristics of the analyzed material, the customer receives a detailed table showing the chemical composition (base polymer and additives) and some useful physical-mechanical parameters related to the material’s characteristics, such as the melt flow index (MVR-MFR) and the thickness of the film.
